May 4-8-Reading 7-Dandridge-Periods 1,2,5,6,7

These plans are tentative and may have to be changed due to unforeseen circumstances.

Make sure that you are reading your AR books and meeting the requirements for the fourth nine weeks!

Students need a half sheet of poster board and fine tip markers on Friday of this week for a project we will be doing in class!

Monday, May 4-50 question comprehensive test on The Outsiders (all 12 chapters). Students will work on vocabulary words when finished with the test. Test on vocabulary on Wednesday. Make sure that you have already begun to study.

Tuesday, May 5-Students will complete a writing assignment on The Outsiders (in class only.) Study for vocabulary test-55 words from packet! Test tomorrow!

Wednesday, May 6-Vocabulary test on The Outsiders. This will be a 55 question test from the vocabulary words in the packet. The Outsider packets including the comprehension questions using complete sentences and the vocabulary sheets will be turned in today!!!!! Read AR when finished.

Thursday, May 7-AR test on The Outsiders scheduled in the lab (to count as one of your fiction AR books this nine weeks. Work on Animal Unscramble worksheet when finished with test. Bring thin line markers to class on Friday for activity!

Friday, May 8-Begin work on Word Snapshot using poster board and markers. Explain assignment. Students will complete in class on Monday.

Journeys I-4th period-Students are reading aloud The Outsiders and answering the comprehension questions that go with each chapter. There will be a test on Chapters 1-6 and then on Chapters 7-12. Students need to be present so they do not get behind since the book will be read in class only. AR requirements are listed at the top of the plans for this week.

April 13-May 1, 2009-Reading 7-Dandridge-Periods 1,2, 5,6,7

 

You need to have taken at least one AR test by Friday, April 24 so that you do not have a zero on your progress report which will go home on Tuesday, April 28.

Tuesday, April 13-Friday, May 1-Students will continue reading the novel The Outsiders and working on study questions and vocabulary. Test on the first six chapters will be Wednesday, April 22. Be sure that you stay caught up on your reading! Test on Chapters 7-12 on Thursday, April 30.

Journeys 7-4th period-Continue doing Journeys Expedition 10 until finished. Then read "The Outsiders" orally with the class working on discussion questions as we read through the novel. We will have tests as we go through the novel.

 

March 23-April 10-Reading 7 Lesson Plans-Dandridge-Periods 1,2,5,6,7

Review for SAT/ARMT tests all week. Discuss ThinkLinkLearn 3 test and point out questions most missed. Allow students to ask questions on any questions missed on the test. Pass out handouts to review. Test on Thursday, March 26 covering skills covered during the year, Please review sheets and study notes taken in class. Use Practice Probes on areas that need extra practice. Testing will be the week of March 30-April 3 and April 6 and April 9. After testing, we will then begin the novel "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton which will be read in class. We will discuss all of the literary terms that we have studied in class as we read this novel. We will be doing comprehension checks, reading activities, and tests as we read to ensure that students are keeping up with their reading. If your child reads slowly, you may wish to check at a bookstore and purchase one for home use.

Journeys-4th Period

Review for SAT’s. After SAT’s, students will continue working in the Journeys book beginning with Expedition 10. This includes vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, computer skills, and writing along with other reading skills.

Monday, Feb. 16-Presidents’Day-No School

Tuesday, Feb. 17-Check pages from reading book completed on Friday-p. 294-298. Read AR for the remaining of the period.

Wednesday, Feb. 18-Do ARMT Practice "Of Cabbages and Kings." Read carefully and then answer each question. Each question will be worth 5 points each. Encourage students to do their best. Check at the end of class and turn in.

Thursday, Feb. 19-Do ARMT Practice from reading books p. AL 42-63. Work in groups and complete for daily grade of 100. Some students will probably be attending the basketball games at Jacksonville State today,

Friday, Feb. 20-Do ARMT Practice "Make Room for Brooms." Read carefully the passage and then answer the questions. Encourage students to do their best! Check at the end of class and turn in.

Monday, Feb. 23- Do ARMT Practice "Alabama’s Prehistoric Past" "Paper Mache Mask" and Items Not Associated with Passage. Encourage students to read carefully and answer questions carefully! Check in class.

Tuesday, Feb. 24-Writing Assessment through homeroom. Classes that meet will work on AHSGE practice (Items 1-51.)

Wednesday, Feb. 25-Think Link Learn Practice Tests through homeroom. Classes that meet will finish the AHSGE practice (Items 1-51) (Pages 1-31) and check.

Thursday, Feb. 26-Think Link Learn Practice Tests through homeroom. Classes that meet will continue the AHSGE practice (33 items-Pages 32-49) and check.

Friday, Feb. 27-Listen to the story "Amigo Brothers" on CD. Students will follow along as story is read. They will then copy the vocabulary words down in reading notebook.

Monday, March 2-Do Vocabulary Practice Probe. Have students to complete on their own paper. We will use the CPS system to check tomorrow.

Tuesday, March 3-Check answers to Vocabulary Practice Probe on CPS System. Talk about why students selected certain answers. Then allow students to move to their groups to do a Venn diagram showing how Antonio and Felix from the story "Amigo Brothers" are similar and different (Compare and contrast) and decide on the theme of the story. Also we will discuss the characters and the conflict. Each person in the group must do a diagram. This will be turned in for a grade. Do a Somebody Wanted But So chart if time permits.

Wednesday, March 4-Students will complete Practice Probe on Main Idea/Theme (1-16)

and we will check in class. This is an area that students did not do well on earlier on ThinkLinkLearn.

Thursday, March 5-Students will complete Practice Probe on Supporting Details (1-10)

And we will check in class. This is another area that students did not do well on earlier on ThinkLinkLearn.

Friday, March 6-AR DEADLINE is today. All requirements must be met by the end of the day today to count on the third nine weeks. Students will complete Practice Probe Literary Strategies (1-!!) and Literary Devices (1-9) and check in class. These were areas that students did not do well on earlier on ThinkLinkLearn.

4th Period-Journeys Class will continue working in various expeditions in class. This program covers comprehension, vocabulary, listening, fluency, and computer skills.   Be sure to study vocabulary words that are copied down in class.  AR Deadline will be March 6.  Make sure that you have met all requirements by that date! 

 

 

 

 

February 2-6-Reading 7-Dandridge-Lesson Plans-Periods 1,2,5,6,7

Progress reports will be sent on Feb. 10. Make sure that you have tested on at least one AR book by Feb. 6. I will be printing reports at that time, and you will have a 0 for AR if you have not tested on one book in your level at that time.

Monday, Feb. 2-Copy vocab words for Lesson 34-Take about 5 minutes to do this. Test on Tuesday, Feb. 10 on Lessons 34-38. Discuss the story "A Retrieved Reformation." Use the guided reading questions to help. Then have students do a on-half page summary of this story. Use the hand to help get the 5 W’s in the summary. Be sure to encourage students to tell from the beginning of the story to the end.

Tuesday, Feb. 3-Vocabulary Lesson 35-DOR-Copy 10 words and definitions and read the sentences and story using the words in context. Partner read the story "The Three Century Woman" and then do an individual chart for each person telling what characters look like, how they behave, how others see the character, and how you would describe the character’s personality.

Wednesday, Feb. 4-DOR-Vocabulary Lesson 36-Copy words, definitions, and read sentences and stories using the words in context. Read "Charles" by Shirley Jackson and do a comparison chart like the one you did yesterday for "The Three Century Woman." Talk about similarities and differences.

Thursday, Feb. 5-DOR-Vocabulary Lesson 37-Read "Encounter with Martin Luther King, Jr." by Maya Angelou. Discuss guided reading questions. Test tomorrow on "A Retrieved Reformation, "Three Century Woman," "Charles," and "Encounter with Martin Luther King, Jr." Be sure to study the vocabulary that you have in your notebook. Test will be on scantron; you will need a number 2 pencil.

Friday, Feb. 5-DOR-Vocabulary Lesson 38- Test on Lessons 34-38 on Tuesday. Test today on all the stories studied this week beginning with "A Retrieved Reformation." Read AR when you finish the test. Make sure that you have tested on at least one book before the end of the day today to avoid a 0 on your progress report for AR.

Journeys -4th Period

Test on Expedition 7 on Monday; be sure that you have studied the vocabulary that goes with each lesson. SOLO day will be on Tuesday; then we will begin on Expedition 8 on Wednesday.

Monday, January 19-Martin Luther King Holiday-No School

Tuesday, January 20-Watch inauguration of Barack Obama. Have students take notes on what the see and hear as they watch the inauguration festivities.

Wednesday, Jan. 21-Read silently "The Collected Grief of a Nation." Then do a One-Pager on what you learn from the story. Decide on what you think is the most important picture that comes to your mind when you think about the article and draw it in the middle of the page. Choose the five most important words (key words) and write those around the picture. List what you think are the five most important sentences from the article and write them on the page. Then write one summary sentence (7th grade level) telling what you learned from this story. Turn in at the end of the period.

Thursday, Jan. 22-Read "A Mother’s Words" orally. Write ½ page telling what you think writing this letter to her son Bill meant to this mom. This will be due at the end of the period.

Friday, Jan. 23-Study the timeline and answer the questions on p. 215 under Comprehension and Critical Analysis. Then choose one conclusion from the three given and fill in your outline for that conclusion.

Monday, Jan 26-Test on the Legacy of Viet Nam including p. 208-215. Then copy the words for ‘The Scholarship Jacket."

Tuesday, Jan. 27-Talk about dreams and what sometimes stands in the way of dreams. Read the story "The Scholarship Jacket" and fill out the 5 finger handout answering the questions Who, What, When, Where, Why on each finger. Take information and write a summary of this story. Test on the story on Thursday.

Wed.., Jan. 28-Do acrostic on "The Scholarship Jacket." Retell the story from the beginning using an acrostic THE SCHOLARSHIP JACKET letters to begin each line of the acrostic.

Thursday, Jan. 29-Test on " The Scholarship Jacket." Use the CPS system to test.

Friday, Jan. 30-Copy the words from the story "The Retrieved Reformation " and answer the guided reading questions on the right side of each page. Use complete sentences to answer the question. Please restate the question and capitalize and punctuate correctly.

Continue working on the expeditions in this scripted reading program.

Monday, Jan. 12-Vocabulary Lesson 32-Copy words, definitions and parts of speech. Read sentences for context use of the words. Discuss the words and read the myth containing the words in context. Continue reading the story "Zebra" and answering the guided reading questions using complete sentences. Complete story and questions by end of the class on Tuesday.

Tuesday, Jan. 13-Vocabulary-Spend first 10 minutes reviewing the vocabulary words for Lessons 28-32. Test will be on Wednesday. Complete reading and guided reading questions with "Zebra." We will discuss the questions on Wednesday after the vocabulary test. Study for the vocabulary test!

Wednesday, Jan. 14-Vocabulary test on Scantron-Lessons 28-32. Discuss "Zebra" using guided reading questions. Answer any questions students have about story . Remind students to study vocabulary words for the story "Zebra." They will be included on the test on the story which will be tomorrow (Thursday).

Thursday, Jan. 15-Test on "Zebra." Read AR when test is completed. Work on "I AM" Poem for the story "Zebra."

Friday, Jan. 16-Pass back Think Link Learn tests and have students make corrections. Discuss in depth the questions that most of the students in each class missed. Have students make corrections on all of the questions that they missed.

Journeys- 4th Period

Continue in Expedition 6. Test on Expedition will be at the end of the week. Students should study any vocabulary words that they have in their notebooks for Expedition 6.

Monday, Jan. 5-Teacher work day-No school for students.

Tuesday, Jan. 6-Do Vocabulary Starter Lesson 28 for the first 10 minutes of class. Read the fable using the vocabulary words in context and talk about its moral. Then turn to p. 174 and discuss what makes a great character. Have students name some great characters in books and movies. In groups, have students do the handout on vocabulary and notetaking using pages 176-183 to help. Each student must have completed this handout.

Wednesday, Jan. 7-Vocabulary Starter Lesson 29-follow the same procedure as on Tuesday. Take a grade on the handout from yesterday. Then have students turn to p. 183 and do Vocabulary in Context. They will try to figure out the meaning of the word based on its use in the sentence. Then they will copy the vocabulary words from the story and write the definitions for them. Talk about the reading strategy Visualization and what it means. Discuss the picture on p. 185 and have students predict what they think the picture represents. If time permits, begin reading "Zebra" and answering the questions on each page to guide the reading.

Thursday, Jan. 8-Vocabulary Starter Lesson 30-follow the same procedure as on Tuesday. Continue reading "Zebra" and answering questions as they read.

Friday, Jan. 9-Vocabulary Starter Lesson 31-follow the same procedure as on Tuesday. Complete reading "Zebra" and answering the questions as they read. Discuss on Monday and test on "Zebra" on Tuesday. You will have a vocabulary test on Wednesday of next week covering Lessons 29-32. Please begin studying over the weekend.

 

Journeys Class-4th period

Continue working through the expeditions focusing on comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and technology. This is a scripted fast-paced program which has been proven to increase students’ reading levels.

Monday, Dec. 8-Friday, Dec. 19-Do a background study of Charles Dickens and then read the play version of "A Christmas Carol." Do other activities that go along with the play as it is read orally in class.

Monday, Dec. 1-View the movie clip"Back to the Future." The read the movie review entitled "The Unnatural Course of Time p. 155-156. Also complete the worksheets that go with this story. Turn in at the end of the period.

Tuesday, Dec. 2- Read "Papa’s Parrot." by Cynthia Rylant on page 166-169 silently. Then answer the comprehension and open ended questions 1-10 on pl 168.

Wednesday, Dec. 3-Begin on the Unit 1 Test that is to be administered after the completion of Unit 1.

Thursday, Dec. 4-Complete Unit 1 Test.

Friday, Dec. 5-Begin Unit 2-Discuss characterization and what makes a great character. Also discuss point of view. Review p. 174-181 orally.

Journeys Class (4th period)

This class will continue in the Journeys book on Expedition 5. This fast paced research based reading program is proven to improve students’ reading levels. It works on comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, computer skills, and writing.

 

Nov. 17-Nov. 25-Reading 7-Dandridge 7-Periods 1,2,5,6,7

Progress reports will be sent home on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Please sign and return for a responsibility grade in my class.

Please continue reading AR books in your level and testing on books as you complete them. Don’t forget to log in the times that you read and get your parents to sign your log. Your log will count as a grade at the end of the nine weeks!

Monday, Nov. 17-Read the story "An American Tradition." Do Cause and Effect sheet and four pictures that retell the story. Present in small groups tomorrow.

Tuesday, Nov. 18-Present cause and effect sheets and summary pictures in small groups. Then each person will turn in for a grade. Listen to "Casey at the Bat." Pass out progress reports to each class. Test Thursday on "An American Tradition" and "Casey at the Bat."

Wednesday, Nov. 19-Assign parts to "Casey at the Bat" and read chorally. Then discuss the poem and make sure that each student understands the content of the poem. Test on Thursday on both selections covered this week.

Thursday, Nov. 20-Test on "An American Tradition" and "Casey at the Bat." Grade papers and discuss test with students,

Friday, Nov, 21-Students will read the story "It’s Not about the Bike." This is part of an autobiography by Lance Armstrong. Students will read silently and then do a poem entitled "The Most Important Thing I Learned about La Trice Haney." Follow the format that I have on the board. Use information from the text to do your poem. Turn in at the end of the period.

Monday, Nov. 24-Students will be doing Think Link Learn Tests in homeroom for part of the day. Other classes will be watching a video and comparing it to the story that we read or doing some Thanksgiving actvities for today and tomorrow.

November 3-November 14-Reading 7-Dandridge-Lesson Plans-Periods 1, 2, 5, 6, 7

These plans are tentative and may have to be changed due to unforeseen circumstances.

Progress reports will go home on November 18. Each students needs to have taken at least one AR test by Friday, Nov. 14 so that I will have time to get the AR grades in the computer by the time progress reports go home. Please do not wait until the last minute to take these AR tests.

Monday, Nov. 3-Check Reading Labels packet from last Wednesday. Record grades. Pass back vocabulary tests for students to take home and have signed. Have students to answer the discussion questions that go with "Thank You, M’am and Rikki-tikki-Tavi." These must be a paragraph each using good seventh grade sentences.

Tuesday, Nov. 4-Review "ThinkLinkLearn" test reviewing last years’s skills and correct questions missed. Add 10 points to test grade for everyone who makes corrections and participates in the review.

Wednesday, Nov. 5-Pass out sticky notes and have students write everything they know about the Titanic. Have students share. Read Targeted Passage and discuss the foreshadowing from the paragraph. Copy all of the vocabulary words and definitions in reading notebook for test on story on Friday. Then read silently "Exploring the Titanic." As students read, have them to fill out a literary elements sheet, a suspense sheet using the notes on the side to help, and a chronological order time line sheet beginning with Line 140.

Thursday, Nov. 6-Complete reading and discuss "Exploring the Titanic." Complete the Literary Elements sheet, the suspense sheet, and the chronological time line sheet. These will be turned in on Friday. Test on this story on Friday.

Friday, Nov. 7-Discuss the handouts for "Exploring the Titanic" and turn in for a grade. Answer any questions that students may have relating to the story. Do the test and use the Fast Grade with the clickers to grade it.

Monday, Nov. 10-Do Real World Reading "Reading Instructions" independently in class. This will be for a grade, so students need to read carefully and answer the questions completely. This will be done in class only and will be taken up at the door at the end of class. Students will read AR silently when you finish the packet.

Tuesday, Nov. 11-Veteran’s Day-NO SCHOOL! Enjoy your day! SD

Wednesday, Nov. 12-Do Real World Reading "Reading Schedules" independently in class. This will be for a grade, so students need to read carefully and answer the questions completely. This will be done in class only and will be taken up at the door at the end of class. Students will read AR silently when you finish the packet.

Thursday, Nov. 13-Grade the packets completed in class on Monday and Wednesday.

Friday, Nov. 14-Read "An American Childhood’ and do a Cause and Effect chain as you read the story. Students need to have tested on at least one AR book by today so that I do not have to record a O for AR on progress reports which will go home next Tuesday.

Journeys-4th period

Nov. 3- Nov. 14-Continue reading AR. Students need to have taken at least one AR test by November 14 so that it can be recorded on the progress report. Students will test on Expedition 4 at the end of the first week, probably on Wednesday, Nov. 5 or Thursday, Nov. 6. Your child should have the test recorded in the planner. Please remember to study the vocabulary words for each of these stories in this expedition. We will then immediately begin on Expedition 5. All of the work for this class is done in class except studying the vocabulary words and staying up-to-date on the AR requirements. This is a fast paced research based reading program which has proven to increase students’ reading scores.

 

 

October 27-Oct. 31-Reading 7-Lesson Plans-Dandridge

All classes continue reading AR and working to meet deadlines for the second nine weeks. Don't forget to get your log signed! 

Periods 1,2,5,6,7---Test on "Thank You, M’am" and "Rikki-Tikki-tavi" on Friday of this week (October 31).

Monday, Oct. 27-DOR- Study for 10 minutes for Lessons 23-27 vocabulary test which will be on Tuesday. Then review the part of "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" that we read on Friday. Also make sure that students understand the background to the story. Then continue listing to the story with students following along as the audio is played. Have them to pay close attention to the following literary elements: Suspense, Cause and Effect, and Predictions

Tuesday, Oct. 28-Lessons 23-27 vocabulary test. Test will be on scantron. Be sure that you have a pencil to take the test. After the test, continue listening/reading "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi."

Wednesday, Oct. 29-Do "Reading Labels" Practical Reading packet in class. Students who plan to go to the volleyball game will make this assignment up at home. Students will turn in papers and then read AR when finished.

Thursday, Oct. 30-Do a couple of reading activities with "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi." Have students list the examples of suspense in the story and the examples of cause and effect. Divide into groups to do these activities.

Friday, Oct. 31-Test on "Thank You, M’am" and "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" today. Use CPS clickers to take the test. Then students will do the four discussion questions after they finish. These will count 10 points each.

4th period-Journeys class-Continue working on Expedition 4 of this high interest fast paced reading series which has proven to improve reading levels with students. This will be done primarily in class; however, students will have vocabulary words to learn for each story. This program covers vocabulary, comprehension, writing, word study, and computer skills. Students are also to read AR for 30 minutes each night and have logs signed.

 

 

October 20-24-Reading 7- Dandridge-Lesson Plans-1,2,5,6,7 Periods

 

These plans are tentative and may have to be changed due to unforeseen circumstances.

The second nine weeks begins TODAY, October 20! You will get your new reading level and need to get started working on your requirements. Please go ahead and get the requirements met at the beginning of the nine weeks, and then you may read anything that you choose as long as you continue reading. Don’t forget to log your reading in each night and get your parents to sign each night that you did read for 30 minutes.

Monday, October 20- DOR-Vocabulary Lesson 23-Copy words and definitions and study the words used in context. Read the fable containing the vocab. words for today orally and talk about the moral. Go around to each student and give them their new reading level for AR for the new nine weeks. The grade Practical Reading Packets on Reading a recipe (completed before break.) Take up papers and record grades. Discuss questions as we are grading.

Tuesday, Oct. 21-DOR Vocabulary Lesson 24-Use same format as Monday. Read silently the Online Article "Spot Goes High Tech." Then do a "Most Interesting Thing that I Learned" poem about the article-RBS Activity -Show students how to do the poem. Complete in class and turn in for a grade. AHSGE, SAT 10, COS

Wednesday, Oct. 22-DOR Vocabulary Lesson 25-Use same format as Monday. Have students do a web on Who Sees the Best in Me? Talk about these as a starter to get us in to our story for today. Talk about the vocabulary words (p. 63) for the story. Talk about the author’s background. Have students read silently "Thank You, Mam" by Langston Hughes. Look for conflicts and decide if they are external or internal. Talk about inference. RBS Activity-Make two charts and list the conflicts and inferences as you read. COS, SAT10, AHSGE

Thursday, Oct. 23-DOR Vocabulary Lesson 26-Discuss the story from yesterday. Have students write a letter from Roger to Mrs. Jones many years later. Share letters with the class. Talk about bravery. RBS Strategy-Listen to the Audio Anthology of "Rikki Tikki Tavi and have students follow along as they listen. Pay close attention to the targeted areas as your listen. Talk about cause and effect, suspense, and conflict and they relate to the story. AHSGE, SAT 10, COS

Friday, October 24-DOR Vocabulary Lesson 27-Test on Lessons 23-27 on Tuesday of next week. Continue listening to the Audio Anthology for "Rikki Tikki Tavi." Then do the comprehension and literary analysis questions on page 89 and vocab practice on p. 90. We will discuss the questions and the story on Monday.

Journeys 7- 4th Period-This is a research based fast paced program that has proven to raise reading levels for students. We will do the SOLO lesson on Monday, a writing lesson on Tuesday, and group reading on Wednesday before beginning Expedition 4 on Thursday. Please encourage your child to read AR each day and get the AR requirements met early in the nine weeks. Then he/she may read whatever he/she enjoys reading for the remainder of the nine weeks. Don’t forget to sign the logs indicating that your child is reading 30 minutes each night. Thanks for your help with this very important matter.

Have students read the story "Seventh Grade" (p.32-38) by Gary Desoto silently in class. As they read, students are to complete a T chart. Thursday, Oct. 9-Complete reading of "Thank You, M’am" and have students do a Somebody Wanted But So summary of this story. (RBS Strategy) Also do character descriptions of Roger and Mrs. Jones or have students write a thank you letter from Roger to Mrs. Jones years later apologizing to her.

Friday, Oct. 10-Do Reading acrostics using literary terms and things that you have learned to fill them out. Happy Fall Break! No school next week Oct. 13-17. See you on the 20th.

Journeys-4th period

Reminder-AR deadline is Oct. 7. Make sure that you have completed your required reading and taken all AR tests for the first nine weeks on this date!

Any make up work must be completed by Oct. 7 also.

We are on Expedition 3 in Journeys. We have taken tests on Expedition 1 and Expedition with the grades of Expedition 2 being much better than those of Expedition 1. Remember that you have the vocabulary words to study for the tests. At least half of the test will be vocabulary for each expedition. Journeys is a research based fast paced high interest reading program that has been proven to improve reading scores for students. The student will not have homework other than reading AR, but they really do need to be at school so they do not get behind. It is very difficult to get makeup work done in this program because it is so fast paced.

We are continuing in our Journeys program. This program has been proven to improve students’ reading levels. We are in Expedition 2 and should be testing on Tuesday of this week. Parents, please encourage your child to read AR each night and remember to sign his/her log if he/she does so. Students should have read at least one AR book to avoid having a 0 on the progress report. Progress reports will be sent home on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Please sign it and return it promptly, and your child will receive a grade of 100 for responsibility. Remember: Make up day is every Tuesday morning at 7:00 and any day during break. If your child has checked his/her grades on STI and is missing any assignments, he/she needs to make arrangements to get any work made up as soon as possible.

4th Period-Journeys I- This is a new research-based fast paced scripted reading program which has proven to improve students’ reading levels. Students work on Journeys each day in class. This does not require homework except to study vocabulary for the lessons that we cover. Your child’s vocabulary words will be located in his/her reading notebook. Please review these each week in preparation for the test. Journeys I includes vocabulary, comprehension, reading strategies, and different genres of literature.

Monday, August 25-Daily Oral Reading (DOR)-Vocabulary-Lesson 8-Have students copy the words and definitions in vocabulary section of reading notebook. Then read the fable that uses the words in context. Summarize the fable and discuss the words in context. Then have students decide on the moral of the fable.

Explain the differences between similes and metaphors. Have students write the definition and an example of each in Literary Terms section of the notebook. Discuss examples from literature. Do exercises on similes and metaphors on p.18 & 19(A).RBS STRATEGY- Then write five original similes and 5 original metaphors on sticky notes. Share with the class and post. (SAT 10, ACOS, AHSGE)

Friday, Sept. 5-DOR-Vocab. Lesson 12-In Literary Terms section of your notebook, write the title Poetic Language and the term Alliteration. Define and write an example from literature. Discuss other examples from literature. Do p. 31 (A & B) from blue workbooks. RBS STRATEGY-Pass out strips and have each student use alliteration with his/her name. He/She must have at least seven words that have the same sound in the sentence. The sentence may be longer than seven words but at least seven must have the alliteration. Turn in. Thursday, August 21-DOR-Lesson 6-Copy words and definitions in notebook. Study parts of speech and sentences. Then read orally the fable that uses the vocab in context. Discuss imagery and write definition and example under literary terms in reading notebook. RBS STRATEGY-As a whole class, have students listen for the imagery as the class chorally reads. After reading chorally, talk about the images that you heard. Using the poem "The Night Before Christmas," have students draw a picture of Santa that is based on the imagery in the poem. 4th Period-Reading 7-This class will be working this year in a program called Journeys I. It is a research-based scripted high interest fast-paced program that has been proven to improve reading scores for students. We will be working in this program the entire year. The program will work on vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and writing skills. Please encourage your child to be present for class and to turn in all assignments. This work is very difficult to make up since it is done totally in class and moves at such a face pace. Your child’s homework will be to read AR for thirty minutes each night and have you to sign that he/she did that. Logs will be turned in at the end of the nine weeks.

Monday, August 11-Students will share orally the Most Interesting Thing About Me poems that we wrote on Friday.

Tuesday, August 12-Go to the media center for orientation for the entire period. Test on information that Ms. Gray presents.

Wednesday, August 13-DOR Starter-Students will copy the ten vocab. words with the definition. Then read orally the short passage that goes with the words. This should be done daily and will only take approximately 10 minutes. After ten lessons, we will test on the vocabulary words. Discuss the power of ideas on page 2 of the reading book. Using sticky notes, have students respond to the Big Ideas. Then share the ideas from the book.

Thursday, August 14-DOR Strategy (vocabulary) for reading. Discuss the types and characteristics of different genres. Divide into groups and allow each group to make a poster with the different genres.

Friday, August 15-DOR Strategy (vocabulary) for reading for the first 10 minutes.

Then students will work on p. 5-8. Students will work in groups to figure out how to do these posters for poetry, drama., informational and nonfiction text, and types of media.

August 7-Welcome students to class and pass out letters to be sent home and signed explaining rules, objectives for the year, etc. Help students get notebooks set up for the year with the subject dividers.

Aug. 8-Take up forms and continue getting to know students. Have students do an activity to present orally to the class on Monday. Students will view a sample that I have done. The activity is called The Most Interesting Thing About Me Is… and complete following poem: State the most interesting thing in sentence form. Then number the lines 1-5 and write 5 more interesting facts. Then end the poem by repeating the first line of the poem (but the most interesting thing about me is…) again. Plan to stand and read these to the class.
