Guntersville Middle School Physical Education Syllabus 2008-2009

Coach Shankles, Coach Kitchens, Coach Reed, Coach Holaday

Grading Procedures:

Students will participate in L.I.F.E. and Health/Fitness Curriculum. Each student will be graded on participation, dressing out, attitude and enthusiasm, and competency. To be considered "dressed out" a student must have on red shorts, a white t-shirt, and tennis shoes. The students will be required to write their name on the shorts and shirt. The student will not be allowed to participate if they are not "dressed out." The students will begin each week with 100 points. Each time students are not properly dressed a deduction of 10 pts. from the 100 point total will occur. A 10 point deduction will also occur for lack of participation. A total of 20 points a day and 100 points a week can be deducted. The students will then receive a grade at the end of every week. The 9 week grade will be an average score of each week.

Gym Rules:

Classroom Discipline:

Discipline procedures will be followed as stated in the Guntersville Middle School Handbook.

Expectations:

Students are expected to dress out and participate daily. If a student is not able to participate in part or all physical education activities because of physical limitations or handicaps, the parent needs to inform the student’s P.E. coach immediately. A doctor’s note may be required. If the student is sick, the parent must send a dated and signed note. Depending on the circumstances, there will be an alternate assignment for the students not participating (i.e. reading, written reports, helper jobs). Students are allowed 2 home notes per 9 week grading period. After 2 home notes, the students will be required to bring a doctor’s note in order to be excused from class.

Objectives:

Guntersville Middle School will provide a quality daily physical education program. Students will work to improve their levels of physical fitness. As required by the state, the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test will be administered to all students who are able to participate. This test will be administered twice during the year. This test will provide each student with a measure of their fitness level as compared to other students their age. The fitness test, just like any other test, requires some preparation. Therefore, throughout the year we will be working to meet these goals. Each student will be required to run 2 miles per week. We will do this on designated days as a class.

I have read the above and am fully aware of what my child will be ask to do in Physical Education class for the 2008-2009 school year.
