Autobiography Update!!

AR Update

Each student is required to read one AR book each nine weeks.  They must chose a book that is falls within their level and equals at least 6 points.  Upon finishing the book, each student must take an AR test.  This counts as a grade in English class.  The goal set forth for each child this year is 70% or above on each test.  

***The cutoff date for the 1st nine weeks is Tuesday, October 6th.

  • Objective—Students will be able to capitalize proper nouns, abbreviations, and nationalities, use commas in addresses, use colons between hours and minutes, practice pronoun case of subjects, apply correct adverb formation, and choose correct articles.

·        Objective—Students will be able to capitalize proper adjectives, use commas with appositives, use hyphens with compound numbers, use semicolons in compound sentences, and correct run-on sentences.

Literature/Class Novel

• Group work with discussion questions:
  • Group 1:  How did Buck’s relationship with John Thornton differ from his relationships with his previous masters?  How does London illustrate Buck’s intense feelings for Thornton?  How is this in keeping with his new, more primitive self?
  • Group 2:  How does Buck balance his love for Thornton with his more primitive self?
  • Group 3:  What does London mean by the following quotation:
    • “He was older than the days he had seen and the breaths he had drawn.”
  • Group 4:  How does Buck’s love for Thornton compare to Dave’s love of toiling in the traces?
  • Group 5:  Explain the meaning of the following quotation:
    • “[Each] day mankind and the claims of mankind slipped farther from him.  Deep in the forest a call was sounding, and as often as he heard this call, mysteriously thrilling and luring, he felt compelled to turn his back upon the fire, and to plunge into the forest…But as often as he gained the soft unbroken earth and the green shade, the love of John Thornton drew him back to the fire again.”

• Discuss chapter 7, and close the book for the students.
