*Algebra IB Syllabus*
2008-2009 School Year
Course Name: Algebra I
Course #: Period 2 Period 4 Period 5
Textbook: McDougal Littell, Algebra I
Materials: 3-prong notebook, loose-leaf paper, 4-function calculator, pencil (This is a math class, so all work must be done in pencil.), and graph paper
Course Description: Mathematics is very important in today’s world. In Algebra IB, we will be learning many mathematical concepts that will help us to be successful in mathematics and in the world. We will be reviewing Chapters 1-6 before moving on to the new chapters that include:
Chapter 7: Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities
Chapter 8: Exponents and Exponential Functions
Chapter 9: Quadratic Equations and Functions
Chapter 10: Polynomials and Factoring
Chapter 11: Rational Equations and Functions
Chapter 12: Radicals and Connections to Geometry
Course Policies:
Tardiness: Students who are not in the room when the bell rings will be counted tardy. On their second offense the student will be written up and sent to the office. Students should begin working on the warm-up once the bell rings.
Absences & Make-Up Work: Attendance is required everyday. If a student has to miss and the absence is excused, the student will be allowed to make the work up. If the absence is unexcused, the student will not be able to make the work up. Excuses for absences should be submitted immediately at the student’s return. It is the student’s responsibility to set up a time to make up missed work (no later than two days after the student’s return). Students should make-up the missed work on their own time (another class period, before or after school). Work should be made up within 5 school days of the student’s return. If a student does not make the work up, the grade of a zero will be assigned. If a student misses class for a school activity, it is the responsibility of the student to be prepared to make up the work immediately upon return.
Late Work: Late work will be accepted up to one day after the assignment is due for half credit of that assignment. After two days, the grade of a zero will be assigned.
Leaving the Classroom: Students should go to the restroom and/or get a drink of water before or after class. Students will not be allowed out of the classroom except for in the case of an emergency. (The teacher will determine emergencies.)
Class Participation: Participation is expected.
Assignments: Assignments for the entire week will be posted. Students should be aware of these.
Cheating: Cheating will not be tolerated. Students who are caught cheating will receive the grade of a zero and turned in for cheating.
Grading Scale: Grades are determined on a cumulative point system. At the end of the nine weeks, the total number of points is divided by the total points possible. The resulting percentage is the students’ grade for that grading period.
Tests will be given approximately every 1-2 weeks.
Projects will be given throughout the year and count as a test grade.
Quizzes may announced or unannounced.
Homework/Class work will be given each day except test days and checked at the beginning of each period / end of each period, respectively. It will be randomly taken up and graded, as well. Every 4-½ weeks homework/class work grades will be averaged and counted as a test grade for a total of 2 every 9 weeks.

Dear Parent/Guardian and Student,
Let me first say that I am very excited to have your child in my Algebra IB class this semester. I look forward to sharing the wonderful world of mathematics with your child and watching them grow in their mathematical understanding.
Just to better inform you on how I feel about mathematics and teaching, this is my own personal philosophy: “I believe that if you give students the opportunity to learn and understand mathematics, you will watch them succeed in more than just mathematics.”
I hope you have taken the time to read the syllabus and know what I expect of your child. I am looking forward to what I know is going to be a wonderful school year!
