What is DIBELS?

 Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills are tests designed to assess the Big Ideas of reading.  Kindergarten is tested on Phonological Awareness and Alphabetical Principal.  First grade is tested on Phonological Awareness, Alphabetic Principal and Fluency.  Second grade is tested on  Alphabetic Principal and Fluency.

Big Idea:  Phonological Awareness
the ability to hear sounds

  • Initial Sound Fluency (ISF) -  assesses a child's ability to produce and identify the beginning sound of a word.

  • Phonemic Segmentation Fluency (PSF) - assesses a child's ability to produce the individual sounds within a given word.

Big Idea:  Alphabetic Principal
letter/sound relationships

  • Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF)- assesses a child's knowledge of letter sound correspondences as well as their ability to blend letters together to form an unfamiliar "nonsense" words (e.g. fik, lig, etc)

Big Idea:  Fluency
reading with accuracy and automaticity as well appropriate speed , phrasing and expression

  • Oral Reading Fluency (ORF)- assesses a child's skill of reading connected text in grade-level material.
